A wind farm also called a wind park or a wind power station, is a group of wind turbines located relatively in the same area which are interconnected with a medium voltage power collection system in addition to a communications network. A substation is also located on-site. At the substation, this medium-voltage electrical current is increased in voltage with a transformer for connection to the higher voltage transmission system.
Wind farms vary in size from a small number of turbines to several hundred covering an extensive area. Wind farms can be either onshore or offshore and because they require no fuel, they have less impact on the environment than many other forms of power generation.
The world's first wind farm was just 0.6 MW, consisting of 20 wind turbines rated at 30 kilowatts each, installed on the shoulder of Crotched Mountain in southern New Hampshire, in December 1980. Currently, the world’s largest onshore wind farm is Gansu Wind Farm in China and in 2020 was producing an annual capacity of 20,000 MW.
